Pigmentation refers to areas of skin that appear darker than the surrounding tone because of increased melanin. It may present as freckles, sun spots, patches or marks left after inflammation.
What causes pigmentation?
Common causes include sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, acne, injury and certain medicines. Because pigmented lesions have different causes, new, changing or irregular marks should be medically assessed before cosmetic treatment.
