Melasma is a pigmentation condition that causes flat, darker patches, most commonly on the cheeks, forehead, nose and upper lip. It is harmless but can be persistent and may recur after improving.
What causes melasma?
Sunlight and visible light are major triggers. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, some medicines, heat and genetics may increase pigment production, particularly in people with medium to deeper skin tones.
